Comments for my website!

Until today, this website was lacking a good commenting solution. Indeed, Joomla! 1.5.1 (the CMS used for this website) is really great, but it still doesn't have a built-in commenting solution.

But I just solved this problem, installing yvComment. Besides, I installed BigoCaptcha, a plugin which purpose is to display a moving image with some text that unregistered users must copy in order to post a comment. Even better: unregistered users can post comments, but those must be moderated by myself, and I am of course notified about every new comment by e-mail.

By the way, I used BigoCaptcha for the form Create an account, so that only real persons could get an account for my website...

Japanese Language Proficiency Test 2007

On december 2007, I passed an exam called the JLPT (which stands for Japanese Language Proficiency Test). I just wanted to know if what I had learned for one year in Japanese class and in Japan during the summer was enough to get any "grade".

A few days ago, I finally received my results...

FedeRez 2008

Yesterday, I went to Supélec for the "Journée FedeRez 2008". It's the annual meeting of the members of this federation, which groups several organizations such as VIA Centrale Réseaux.

After a very interesting conference done by a French lawyer, the different organization's members presented several little conferences. The main idea was to share information about our projects as sorts of Internet Service Providers for students residences.

Finally, we discussed a long time about the statutes for FedeRez: we are trying to turn FedeRez into an independent non-profit organization...

Blu-ray defeated HD DVD!

A few weeks ago, an extraordinary technological war has finally come to its end. For several years, the two great Japanese Companies Sony and Toshiba have tried to become the leader in next generation movie discs, intended for High Definition movies, with their respective formats: Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

According to this article Toshiba decided to give up on its format, the HD DVD.

Me and my IMAP accounts

The least I can say is that I like e-mail. I like it so much that I have been accumulating so many different e-mail accounts recently, that reading my mails was becoming horrible. That's why I decided to group all my mails on a single e-mail account, and by the way, begin to use IMAP: indeed, I have been using POP (and SSH+mutt, it's true) until now.

I first thought the best solution was to use Gmail: I like Gmail web interface very much, it gives a lot of storage, allows user defined filters, and I can use it in IMAP with any IMAP client. I could even use a custom e-mail address, since Google Apps for your domain is free of charge. Well, in fact, it's complicated...

Welcome to my homepage!

Welcome to my homepage!

Hello!

My name is Joël Lopes Da Silva, and I am 20. I am currently student at the École Centrale Paris, a highly selective engineering school in France.

A few months ago, I bought this domain name, in order to learn how to manage it. But one of the important things I still had not done was an attractive personal website. That's why I decided to try Joomla!, a great CMS (Content Management System) which allows us to make complex websites without writing any code.

Berry

I recently got to know a new French singer: Berry. Berry has been discovered by chance by Mercury, which is just adding a great artist and a great album to its collection...

mmv under Mac OS X Leopard (for Mac Intel)

Since I switched from Debian and Ubuntu to Mac OS X Leopard, I got used to most of the differences between those operating systems. Yet one very important thing for me was still lacking: A command line utility called mmv...

Steve Ballmer: Microsoft's arrogance incarnation

Everytime I read some interview of Steve Ballmer, current CEO of Microsoft, I think: "How can such an arrogant person lead one of the most important companies in the world?" This might be a stupid idea, but I continue hoping that the most important people in the business world are also among the most clever and most broad-minded people. While Bill Gates always appeared to me as a genius, specially for business, his successor doesn't look like him at all...
