Blu-ray defeated HD DVD!

E-mail Print PDF

A few weeks ago, an extraordinary technological war has finally come to its end. For several years, the two great Japanese Companies Sony and Toshiba have tried to become the leader in next generation movie discs, intended for High Definition movies, with their respective formats: Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

According to this article Toshiba decided to give up on its format, the HD DVD.

When you think about it, the end of such wars is usually not decided with technological arguments, but with marketing arguments. Although I perfectly accept that marketing can be much more important for companies profit, as a good technological addict, I always tend to prefer technological arguments.

Honestly, a few months ago, when nothing was clear about this war, I thought, sadly, that the HD DVD would have won, thanks to its important supporters, and not thanks to its specifications.

Yet, apparently, this time, the world has chosen the best technological solution! Indeed, everyone knows that the Blu-ray Disc was much more promising than the HD DVD, because of its maximum storage capacity, for instance. For once, marketing and partnerships allowed technology to win!
